The purpose of this website is to advance:

John James Audubon, FRS, as writer and naturalist -- as well as consummate painter of birds. Today, few know that Audubon was the most honored American naturalist of his day. Audubon and Benjamin Franklin were the only American Fellows of the Royal Society, London, before the Civil War.
The uniqueness of the Audubon Royal Octavo Volumes.  Only in these volumes did Audubon combine his art and his natural history writing.
The importance of first identifying and then preserving remaining sets of Royal Octavo Volumes, even if incomplete.  About 1200 complete sets of the first edition were published in 1840 – 1844 but fewer than 200 complete sets of the first edition could be identified in 2006.
The Audubon Royal Octavo Preservation Initiative to preserve these endangered sets.
