"I am contributing two sizes of limited edition prints of the Passenger Pigeon and the Carolina Parakeet to an auction to be held in Charleston, SC March 4 - 7, 2010. One size print will be an exact facsimile of the six inch by eleven inch hand colored page from my family's 1856 Royal Octavo Size Volumes, Birds of America, by John James Audubon. The print will be presented in a complimentary eleven by fourteen inch mat which can be easily framed or which can be hung as is. The second print will be a custom twenty by thirty two inch enlargement of the page, matted, and mounted in a twenty four by thirty six inch frame evocative of the period.
The Passinger Pigeon print is one of Audubon's most graceful and sought after. The accompanying ten page booklet contains Audubon's personal discription of the bird, enormous flocks of which wwould darken skies over North America for several days..."
The Carolina Parakeet print is pristine. The 1856 volume containing the page had rarely, if ever, been open from the time of its purchase in 1920, as part of a complete seven volume set by my father, Lewis A. Eldridge, Jr, until the present. Consequently, the colors may well be as fresh and the detail as crisp as when originally applied to the page.
Proceeds from the auction of these four prints will benefit Slow Food Charleston. See the following link for details: http://www.slowfoodcharleston.org/events.html
